Rhythm to Burn

I wrote this on a Sunday morning. The music was in my head when I woke up. I was possessed by it, in the fever of it, until I worked it out. A portrait of a dancing fool.

Lyrics

She steps up to the dance floor
‘Cause she can’t sit still anymore
She grabs a partner to take a turn
There’s nothin’ to learn, she’s got rhythm to burn.

She looks around at the crowd
Starin’ through the smokey cloud
For a Fred Astaire, she does yearn
There’s nothin’ to learn, she’s got rhythm to burn.

Rhythm, fast or slow
Rhythm, stop, then go
Rhythm, all she knows
Is where it leads, she will follow.

Once she starts it’s hard to stop
And one by one the dancers drop
The time to leave, she will discern
No need for concern, she’s got rhythm to burn.

The evening’s done, she’s out the door
The rhythm in her very core
Into her dreams, she will adjourn
With no concern and rhythm to burn.
